Five Rioja wines were awarded in the third International Competition of the World Garnachas held in Perpignan on February 9, 2015: I Illuminated 2014 Finca Las Muses; Aradon Garnacha 2012 Vinicola Riojana de Alcanadre; Hebabe Garnacha 2012 Bodegas Bohedal; Tatos 2012 Bodegas Mitarte and Cupani 2012 Homestead San Andrés.

 

Created in 2013 by the Interprofessional Council of the Wines of Roussillon is a global competition that proves the richness and diversity of wines from this variety.

This 3rd edition brought together some 485 wines from 221 producers: cooperatives, independent producers and distributors representing 6 countries (Spain no.1 with 246 wines – Rioja 18; France No.2 with 176 wines, Italy No.3)

A jury of 80 professional tasters (sommeliers, restaurateurs, winemakers, distributors and journalists) from around the world (France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Belgium, United-States, the Netherlands and South Korea) evaluated the wines presented the contest.

Grenache (Garnatxa, Garnacha, Canannau…) originated in Spain, probably in Catalonia or Aragon, and rapidly became established in Mediterranean vineyards.
It is the most widely planted grape variety in the world, covering around 200,000 hectares.
